An awning window is hinged at the top and pushes outward from the bottom, so the open sash projects away from the wall and forms a small canopy over the opening. That geometry is the entire reason the type exists, and it solves a problem no other window solves as neatly.
Because the sash slopes outward and downward from its hinge, rain running down the face of the building is thrown clear of the opening rather than into it. An awning window can stay open through a Central Texas thunderstorm while a casement or a slider in the same wall would have to be shut. In a climate where summer storms arrive suddenly and often at night, that is genuinely useful.
The second common use is high-level ventilation. Awning units placed above head height, above doors, or in a band near the ceiling exhaust hot air that collects at the top of a room, and because they are out of the sightline they can be left open without any privacy or security concern.
The projecting sash sheds water away from the opening, so the window can stay open in weather that would force any other type closed. This is the defining advantage of the format.
Like casements, awning sashes are drawn into perimeter gaskets by the locking hardware, so the seal tightens as the window closes. Air tightness is excellent.
Steel keeps the sash frame narrow, which matters particularly on awning units because they are frequently specified in wide, shallow proportions where a heavy frame would dominate.

Wide and shallow is the classic awning proportion and the one it handles best. Units can sit beneath a fixed pane, above a door, or in a continuous high-level band.

Frames and sashes are fabricated from welded steel section, dressed and ground at the corners. Awning sashes are usually wide relative to their height, and that proportion concentrates load on the top hinges while giving the sash a long unsupported bottom edge. Steel handles this without the sag that a weaker section would develop over years of cycling.
Each sash is hung and cycled in its frame in the shop before finishing, with hinge and stay adjustment, seal compression and lock engagement all set against the actual components. Because an awning sash hangs from its top edge, hinge setting has a direct effect on whether the bottom edge meets its seal evenly, and that is corrected in the shop.
Finishing runs through degreasing, mechanical preparation and a coating system chosen for full exterior exposure. Awning sashes present their outer face upward when open, so they collect more direct sun and more rain on that surface than a vertically hung sash does, and the coating specification accounts for it.
Stays and operators are specified against the sash weight with margin. A projecting sash is exposed to wind loading when open, and the restraint hardware has to handle a gust without distorting. This is the component most often underspecified on awning windows, and it is where failures show up first.

Awning windows fail at their stays and operators when those parts are specified to the minimum. A projecting sash catches wind, and the restraint hardware has to absorb that without distorting. We size these components against the actual sash weight and area with margin, which is an unglamorous detail that determines whether the window still works in ten years.
The wide, shallow proportion that suits awning units is also the one most likely to sag in a weaker frame material. Building the sash in welded steel means the bottom edge stays straight and continues to meet its seal along its whole length, which is what keeps the air tightness that made you choose the type.

Yes, within reason, and it is the main reason to specify one. The sash projects outward from a top hinge and forms a canopy, so water running down the wall is thrown clear of the opening. In heavy wind-driven rain coming directly at the elevation some water may still enter, but for typical Central Texas summer storms an awning window can stay open when nothing else can.
The hinge position. A casement is hinged at the side and swings like a door; an awning is hinged at the top and pushes out from the bottom. Casements move more air and suit tall proportions. Awnings shed rain and suit wide, shallow openings and high-level positions. They are frequently used together on the same elevation for different jobs.
High in the wall is where they do the most good, because they exhaust the hot air that collects at ceiling level and they are out of the sightline for privacy and out of reach for security. The other common position is directly below a large fixed pane, giving ventilation without interrupting the view.
The sash projects outward, so it should not be placed where people walk directly beneath it at head height, along a narrow path or above a patio seating area. On a wall above head height or at an upper floor this is not a consideration. We will flag it if a proposed position looks problematic.
Secure, particularly in the high-level positions where they are usually specified. Multipoint locking engages the frame at several points, and a restricted opening setting is available for background ventilation that cannot be pushed further from outside. A high-level awning unit is also simply difficult to reach.
Yes, in two ways. Closed, they seal by compression like a casement, giving very good air tightness. Open at high level, they exhaust stratified hot air and can reduce the cooling load during the shoulder seasons. Lubricate the hinges, stays and operator annually and check the seals for damage. Because the sash presents its outer face upward when open, it collects more dust and debris than a vertical sash, so wash it a little more often. If the sash stops sealing evenly along the bottom edge, it needs a hinge adjustment.
