An accordion door is a run of hinged steel panels that concertina together as they travel along a track, folding into a compact stack at one or both ends of the opening. The principle is the same as a folding door, but accordion systems are built around higher panel counts, which is what lets them clear openings far wider than a conventional folding pair can manage.
The advantage over a sliding system is that nothing stays parked in the opening. Every panel gathers at the jamb, so the full structural width comes free. The advantage over a low-count folding door is reach: where a wide elevation would need impractically large panels in a three or four panel arrangement, an accordion system divides the same width into more, narrower panels that each stay light and easy to handle.
Steel is what keeps that panel count from becoming a problem. Each additional hinge line is another place where deflection can accumulate, and by the eighth or tenth panel a flexible frame material will have drifted enough that the run no longer folds cleanly. Welded steel panels stay dimensionally stable, so the last panel lands as accurately as the first.
Accordion configurations are built for openings that exceed what a standard folding arrangement handles comfortably, dividing the width into more panels rather than larger ones.
Panels concertina tightly against one another, so a long run collapses into a comparatively shallow stack at the jamb, freeing the entire opening.
Every hinge and carriage is specified against the actual panel weight. On a high-count run the hardware works through far more cycles per panel, so it is sized with margin rather than to the minimum rating.

Panels are fabricated from steel sections, welded at the corners, then dressed and ground so each panel edge reads as a clean continuous line. Consistency across the set is the governing requirement on an accordion run, because a stack of ten panels puts every edge next to another edge for direct comparison.
The complete run is assembled, hung and cycled through its full fold in the shop before finishing. This is where hinge alignment, panel gaps and seal compression get corrected. On a high-count system, small cumulative errors are only visible when the whole run is standing, and they are practical to fix on the shop floor and awkward to fix in a finished opening.
Finishing runs through degreasing, mechanical preparation and a coating system chosen for exterior exposure, hard UV and the wet-and-dry cycling that Central Texas weather produces. Glazing is bedded on setting blocks so no unit carries load through its edge seal.
Track flatness and header deflection are confirmed before fabrication, because a top-hung accordion system depends on both. A header that deflects under load will bind the carriages, and a track laid to an uneven slab will make panels drag. We also allow adjustment at the jambs and hinges to absorb the seasonal movement caused by Austin's expansive clay soils.

High panel counts magnify every tolerance. An error of a fraction per panel is invisible on panel two and obvious by panel ten, when the lead panel no longer meets the jamb square. Controlling that requires consistent fabrication and accurate installation working to the same standard, which is why we do both ourselves rather than handing the system to a separate installer.
Our engineers draw each run against the surveyed opening and model the panel count against stack depth, individual panel weight and the structural capacity of the header. Those four factors trade against each other, and resolving them on the drawings is far cheaper than discovering the conflict on site.

Both fold panels along a track, but bifold systems typically use three to seven panels on a residential opening, while accordion configurations are built for higher counts across wider spans. If your opening is unusually wide, or if a low panel count would produce leaves too large to handle comfortably, an accordion arrangement is the better fit.
Very wide, and the limit is normally structural rather than a property of the system. The header must span the opening within a deflection limit and the track has to stay flat. Send us the opening dimensions and the structural drawings and our engineers will confirm what is achievable.

Yes, and it is one of the reasons to build them in steel. A restaurant that opens and closes its facade twice a day puts a system through a cycle count no residential door approaches. Steel panels stay dimensionally stable through that, and we specify hinge and carriage hardware with commercial duty in mind when the application calls for it.
Yes. Compression seals run the perimeter and between panels, and the multipoint locking pulls the whole run tight. A closed accordion system behaves as a weathertight wall, which is what allows a commercial operator to secure a storefront overnight.
Track cleanliness above everything else, since grit in the track is the main cause of carriage wear and dragging panels. Rinse the panels and seals a few times a year, check hinge fixings each season, and apply a dry lubricant to the moving gear annually. On a commercial installation with heavy use, an annual service visit is worth scheduling.
